I recently used my Colorado TOPO! software to plan a summer backpacking trip in the South San Juans.  I created my custom map with my route in red, marked my expected camp sites, knew my exact daily and total mileage and my daily and total elevation gain and loss.  I printed out my custom map and used it on my trip.  And, I still have my custom map saved to my computer along with several other custom maps I created for trips I would like to do in the future.  It is fun and easy to use.
