Beautiful Desolation - April 10, 2008
There is a new post on the Dusty Globe geography blog called "Beautiful Desolation." It is a true story of a drive from Phoenix to Seattle that my brother and I took in the year 2000. We took the two-lanes instead of the interstates through the Great Basin desert from the south to the north through Arizona, Nevada and Oregon.
It is one of my favorite travel memeries because it is so full of minor mishaps and yet it was such a beautiful trip through some of the most desolate country in America, hence the title "Beautiful Desolation." You can take a look at a map of the United States to see just how remote our route was: From Phoenix north through Las Vegas, then north through Tonopah, Austin, and Winnemucca, and then into Eastern Oregon, through Bend, across the Cascades, through Portland and finally to Seattle.
