The globe depicts the world as it was seen in 1745. Vaugondy presented this globe to France's King Louis XV as a gift. In a time of epic world exploration, Vaugondy plotted the courses of the early ocean-going explorers on this facsinating globe.
Who was Robert de Vaugondy?
Robert de Vaugondy was the foremost mapmaker in France during the 18th century, a time when explorers and navigators pushed back known frontiers. De Vaugondy's presentation of this globe to the King earned him the title of Cartographer to the Royal Court.
